great memories from Thompson Pass, Alaska.. !!
As every year, Icelandic snow/surf/skate clothing designer Heida Birgisdottir calls for the outerwear team to shoot the new catalogue right at their headquarters. Conveniently, Heida’s birthday and the legendary Iceland Airwaves Festival, connecting upcoming bands from Europe and North-America, both happen the same week so it sure always is a good time..
Reykjavik with its 120.000 inhabitants is a fairly small capital and after coming here annually since 2005, I recognize many faces on the streets. On Laugavegur - Reykjavik’s main street, which is packed full of stylish designer stores, restaurants, bars, and a few clubs - there is a NIKITA flagship store. The two upstairs levels serve as the company’s downtown party central and during our photo shoots as team housing. How convenient that the yard has a sick mini-ramp and also hosts two days of off-venue concerts during the Airwaves Festival !!
I’m here with Lisa Filzmoser and Julia Baumgartner from Austria, super-stylish Croatian ripper Ana Rumiha, and LA’s Gabby Maiden - enjoying the cold fall time in Iceland and keeping warm with alcoholic beverages, crowdy bars with experimental music, and of course all the 11/12 outerwear samples…
After three long days of shooting, we had two off-days and somehow, while listening to Icelandic live music in the rain, the idea of surfing somehow came up… I immediately started checking all kinds of surf forecast websites to find out that the swell would be pretty decent the next morning. Super-Ingo, our multi-guide, was up for it and right away organized wetsuits and boards for our crew. He picked us up at 6 am and we arrived at the black lava sand beach right at sunrise…
Even though I have had many great times in Iceland before, this was probably the most alive I have ever felt there - being in the ocean, watching the sun rise, looking at volcanoes and the black sand beach, paddling my little heart out, being with friends..
and dreaming of winter…
